The
quality or strength of an encryption depends
both on the algorithm and the length of the
key used. An attacker has two ways of breaking
a cipher text :

he can try to be clever and
exploit weaknesses of the algorithm, or he
can use brute force and simply try all possible
keys until a useful message appears. An algorithm
is considered strong if it has been public
for several years and no weaknesses have been discovered. An example of such a strong algorithm is International Data Encryption Algorithm (IDEA).
